Lighting for Tomorrow Pilot Application Competition 2009
Purpose
The 2009 LFT pilot Residential Lighting Design Competition seeks to promote the installation of energyefficient lighting in residential new construction or remodels by demonstrating that these light sources can deliver beautiful, high quality lighting while providing significant energy savings. Lighting decision makers (builders, lighting and interior designers, electrical and lighting distributors, lighting retailers and consumers) are encouraged to enter the competition showcasing their energy efficient lighting design.
To meet these objectives, the Lighting for Tomorrow 2009 Competition is seeking residential lighting design applications from all eligible lighting decision makers that meet the requirements of the energy efficient lighting design criteria. For additional information regarding the entry requirements, view the 2009 Pilot Application Competition Entrant Guide, which includes a Timeline of important dates.
Participants
The pilot competition is open to lighting decision makers that are Avista (possibly other utility companies) electric customers. The application competition would require entrants to design lighting in a residential space so that it provides superior light quality for the required tasks with substantial energy savings.
Prize/Promotion
All the individuals involved in the lighting design, the lighting fixture manufacturer, lighting retailer, lighting designer, builder, and consumer will receive recognition for having a role in developing a beautifully-lit space that uses minimal energy.
Professional photos will be taken of the space, the fixtures, the homeowner, and the lighting designer. A brochure of winners will be developed. The winning designs will be promoted for their of use ENERGY STAR fixtures, when applicable.
Submission Categories
Submissions for kitchens, bathrooms, living/family rooms and complete residences with affordable, mid-range, and high-end budgets will be eligible for the competition.
Required Documents
All design submissions have to be already installed or in the process of being completed. Projects must be complete before the scheduled judging date in September.
An online Intent to Submit form must be submitted to competition organizers by July 31, 2009.
A final online submission form must be submitted by August 31, 2009, with the following documentation:
- Photos of space (before and after if remodeling project)
- Electrical plans for the submitted space (including fixture schedule detailing source, manufacturer and model # and any controls used)
- The watts per fixture and the total watts/sq. ft. per room
- Total project cost including lighting design fees, product costs, and installation.
Submission Criteria
- The competition is open to designs with primary applicability in the residential sector, or in residential-style applications such as hospitality and assisted living environments.
- The competition is intended to highlight the best energy efficient lighting design and /or control system.
- All lighting sources are allowed in submitted designs. The potential energy savings of submissions will be judged on total energy consumption, (kWh/S.F.*year).
Judging Criteria
Quality of light
Judges will evaluate whether the lighting design meets the consumers needs in terms of illuminance levels and color quality for individual tasks and general illumination.
Energy efficiency
Judges will evaluate the energy efficiency of each entry based on total energy consumption over a year; the use of controls will therefore be part of the assessment.
Applicability
Judges will determine whether this particular design would work well in all residence types throughout the U.S. and Canada. More points will be awarded to those designs that would work in a wide range of scenarios.
Value
Judges will assess how the overall lighting design measures up to the cost of the project (designer's time, price of products and installation).
